Laboratory for Oral Molecular Biology
Research area
Orofacial clefts, which can manifest as cleft palate only (CP), cleft lip (CL), or cleft lip with cleft palate (CLP), are considered to be among the most common birth defects worldwide. Its management calls for a comprehensive, tedious, and multidisciplinary team effort. However, the deformity is still associated with a variety of functional and aesthetic challenges, which can cause a substantial psychological and emotional burden for afflicted infants and their families.
We aim to:
- promote and advance patient-centered, translational research on orofacial clefts.
- combine the expertise of basic scientists, geneticists, and clinicians.
- employ a patient-derived cell approach to better understand the genetic, molecular, and cellular conditions underlying the malformation and to discover new innovative treatment options for future patients.
- convert scientific discoveries into benefits for patients and society.
